week 1 homework Who are you as a learner? Think back to the Hermann Brain Dominance test earlier this week …
What are your learning styles? What have you learnt about yourself from the Hermann Brain activities this week?
My learning styles belong to the more trial and error system. I like to educate myself on the matter then try it immediately even knowing there is a considerable chance I will not succeed. I rarely take things from face value, I always request a explanation to new information that i receive. I basically work best when im on my own, although i find the experience more enjoyable when im with friends i ethier find my self doing all the work or none of the work. This week i found out something i already new. I work on a semi logical but
Did you disagree with any of the findings/observations? Explain
No, the findings of the quiz seem to fit the way I observed myself to begin with.
Were you surprised by anything you discovered about yourself this week? Consider for example, what you learnt about your learning style, working in teams or observing others in the group …
I discovered how difficult it is for me to work in a group and how intolerant i can get when people don’t immediately understand something I’m trying to say. As i said i work better when I’m on my own or all least have my own work to do.
Do you think you rely too heavily on one style of learning? What new skills would you like to develop?
A. You as a person?
B. You as a learner?
( A and B)
In a way I am happy with the way i work and my productivity rate when i am working by myself. However my people skills are not one of my strengths and i should try and improve them to help me learn of other people and to help me as a person as well. When i am working to achieve something my attitude changes and becomes much more serious. If everyone had this mindset it would work better but the issue is if some people have a more laid back attitude on work and I have a serious attitude towards work then the two clash and become extremely counter productive,
Due on the Wiki: Fri. 24/04/09 Your responses should be detailed and in written in full sentences. Remember to draft your work; looking specifically at spelling, expression and grammar.
Reminder: Keep your Hermann Brain Dominance Test sheets in a folder for use later in the term.

Radical parties in Melbourne.
When I say radical Melbourne rest assure I’m not talking about the latest western suburb Cory party.
Australia has a moderately balanced political system with 80% of Australia votes at the previous federal election going towards the two moderate parties. Those doses however leave 20% of the vote That went to other parties. The national party got 5.49% of Australian votes in 2007, although they call themselves a centre right wing party it is widely considered that they are in fact a plainly right wing party.
To the right of the nationals we have the family first party who only got 1.99% of the votes in 2007. They are the most successful right wing party although most people would not consider them radical.
To the left of labour we have the greens that got 7.8% of the vote in 2007 making them the third most sucecfull party in Australia. However although they have very strong left wing views on a lot of isues, they still don’t make the cut for radicals and im about to say why.
Australia no longer has a communist party, it was phased out in 2001, however at the fall of the communist party was the birth of one of the most successful radical left wing parties in Australia the Socialist alliance. The socialist alliances are rather effective in their fight against sexism, racism, and homophobia and anti environmental legislations. The socialist alliance is the most organised of all the socialist parties and have a few representatives in various local councils including Yarra and Melbourne.
Another interesting party that could be consider radical is the fishing party. I saw that they got votes in 2007 but I never actually pursued to find out what they were about. I was interested by the fact that not only are they not even a little bit of a joke but they are actually extremely serious red neck twats (in my opinion J). They are basically against any regulation for recreational fishing and less regulation for industrial fishing. They are entirely against the greens party and dedicate the little media time they get to demean the greens.
The right wing radical parties of Australia are not as prominent as the left, the One nation party is probably the most well known radical right wing party, with the infamous Pauline Hanson making headlines on numerous occasions with her controversial policy against immigration. The one national party thankfully has been completely fazed out of Australian parliaments with the last rep being voted out in last year’s Queensland election.
The other party in Australia that could possibly could be consider radical right is the family first party. They probably would not call them self’s radical right because they disagree with allot of right wing classical views such as issues concerning the environment. They are however completely against gay marriages, abortions and essentially agree with the one nation party on immigration however do not say this as frankly. At the recent election family first got 2.99% of the vote.

Everything we do is ultimately selfish because everything we do is to either benefit from in some way (i.e buying someone something to try and buy their friendship in one way or another) or to make ourselves feel better and make it seem like we are doing something to our selves (i.e donating half a pay check to starving Africans will help us sleep at night)
However that’s interpreting selfishness as being a basic form of wanting to make our selves happy. Selflessness can be interpreted as someone who helps others as well as helping them selvs. Even though you do it because you want to, you are also making someone else happy.
If a person has the choice between living a happy wealthy life where they donate half a million dollars to a charity every year to make them selves feel happy. And a life living on $25 thousand dollars a year helping protect the environment for NRDC. And they chose the second option, does that make them more selflessness then if they were to take the first road?
So if someone is more selfless then someone else does that mean that there is selflessness superior. Dose selfishness actually exists? Is it just a word which people have intentionally put a negative annotation on to discourage people from not helping others?
To summarise, no not everyone is essentially selfish because that leaves everyone’s forms of self comprimisation at the same level. No one is fully selfless either, but no one is entirely homosexual or entirely obsessed by cats. No one person in this world can have such a strong trait to their personalities that it is how their personality is described.

I think that although community service can create a strong relationship between the helper and the
helpee, the statement ‘The connection and relationship with the community that develops from community service adds an invaluable layer to education’. I think is far to broad to be true.
I assume the main idea of what she is saying is A strong part of education is the lesson of helping/getting along with people and the learning of the responsibility of a good citizen. Yes, that can be achieved by community service but a lot of the time it wont, and even when it does the lesson is forgotten as soon as the community service is up and even when it’s not compulsory, the term ‘community service’ usually refers to a short term service to the community’.
To give what I’m talking about an example: For my community service I worked at Carlton primary school, this was possibly the stupidest most pointless thing have ever done at high school. The only thing I learnt from the community service was that I never want to become a primary school teacher (and I already pretty much knew that). Although I acknowledge the teachers job isn’t to entertain me, she could at least do something like let us read to the class or ask for our opinions in class conversations. It wasn’t like they didn’t know that we were coming.
Back to my point, in my time in community service I don’t believe the invaluable layer to my education of community love and what not was even skimmed. If anything I’m afraid I have become less in touch with the community and more intolerant to little children and any emotion of inner community affection that I may have already experienced has been over written by my new found hatred towards all primary school teachers and students (no exclusions).
One day I want to learn what it feels like to be in a loving wider community spiritual environment, however compulsory community service in a overly privileged inner city primary school, being harassed by grade six students whilst being yelled at by a control freak crazy bitch of a teacher doesn’t seem like the ideal situation to experience this.
My suggestion for next term is instead of going to schools like Carlton gardens where we (I) wasn’t wanted, we should do more creative/education voluntary community services like helping at old persons home (avoiding the rats) or joining the people who clean up the Melbourne water ways or even helping out at a hospital. I think the special school was a great idea, and Neil Street wasn’t bad either, but Carlton gardens dose not need any help.
